Tribes by Seth Godin

December 7, 2009

On my way home from Las Vegas on Saturday morning, I was sitting in the terminal and just began reading Tribes by Seth Godin.  About 5 minutes into reading, a man came over to me and said “That’s a great book, you’ll enjoy it!” I became intrigued.  I was determined to finish the book by the time my plane landed in Madison 6 hours later.

The gentleman was right, this really was a great book.  Godin gave the message that regardless of who you are, where you’re from, or what you do in life, there is a tribe, “a group of people connected to one another connected to a leader, and connected to an idea,” waiting for your leadership.

Tribes is a short book, but is full of different ways one could start a tribe, or one could become a leader.  Godin states that not everyone should lead in every situation, you truly need to have a passion for the tribe.  He does however, say that just because you’re not the leader, does not mean you shouldn’t be a part of the tribe. There are many tribes one may want to be a part of, but they do not have the ability to lead it.

Godin makes a great point that that internet connects over a billion people, which makes being a leader and/or being a part of a tribe easier than ever before.  Through his book, Godin has motivated me to help change my company through the use of social media, he has given me the stepping stones to be the leader of Hy Cite Corporation’s tribe.
